People First Bridgend

People First Bridgend is a charity advocating for the rights of adults with learning disabilities and autism in Bridgend County.

We are part of the international People First self-advocacy movement, which started in the USA and spread around the globe to places such as UK, Germany, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

We started as a self-advocacy group ensuring that people in closed institutional settings had a voice about their treatment. When these institutions closed, most learning disability care and support was moved into community settings. We followed and continue our advocacy work, ensuring people’s rights are protected and helping people live more independently.

Our activities include:

- Self-advocacy groups
- One-to-one Independent advocacy
- Easy Read document translation
- Disability awareness training
- Consultations

We also get involved in local, regional and national development plans, and a variety of other advocacy-related activities where possible.
