The Newport Paths Group is made up of enthusiastic volunteers of all ages who work to improve access to the countryside in Newport for people of all abilities, and to improve the environment and people's understanding of it. The group was founded in 1999 and created the Newport Millennium Trail with information panels and a trail guide to celebrate the new millennium. It then organised the Parrog-Cwm Easy Access Path with information panels, leaflets and large print and Braille guides.
Its most important commitment is to clear and maintain local Public Rights of Way. Its volunteers work closely with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA) Rangers to maintain and improve footpaths, clear streams and install new bridges among other tasks. Since 2015 the Group has been helping to eradicate Himalayan Balsam which is invading and spoiling the banks of the Nevern and the Clydach.
The Group depends entirely on the enthusiasm of its volunteer members. The Group is managed by a committee of elected members with representatives of the Council and PCNPA. The Newport Town Council and PCNPA support the Group.
