Area 43 (Cardigan Youth Project)
Area 43 is a Registered Charity based in Cardigan, West Wales. Founded in 1996. We have been at the centre of the Third Sector in West Wales for almost 20 years. Working from our Cardigan Information and Support Centre we have managed to scale our services over that time to positively impact on thousands of young people. We provide Counselling services to Secondary and Primary schools across Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion and operate one of the largest teams of independent, qualified Counsellors in Wales.
We are monitored by a voluntary management committee established in 1996 made up of representatives from the local community including Cardigan Town Council. The Area 43 Cardigan Information and Support Centre opened full-time at the beginning of September 1997 with Phil Layton as Project Manager.
Our philosophy is to assist young people in developing self esteem and a positive approach to their lives and their place in society. We provide a space where they can relate to their peer group and to adult role models who encourage them to participate in learning experiences and decision making processes.
Through these processes they can come to a greater understanding of themselves, and the issues which affect their lives, the lives of those around them and in their community. We are also committed to forging links and representing the needs and aspirations of our young people within the community and also with the various agencies and service providers throughout West Wales and beyond.
Our premises at 1 Pont y Cleifion were purchased and renovated specifically for the Drop-In Information Centre, as was our mobile information unit. We have been funded in the past by the Big Lottery, Community Fund, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, Electoral Commission, Community Music Wales, Ceredigion County Council, Carmarthenshire County Council, Cardigan Town Council, Police Community Safety Fund, Wales Council for Voluntary Action, Jobcentre+, Welsh Government, European Funds, local community councils and public donations.
As an independent registered charity we rely on the support and goodwill of our local community and volunteers, funding bodies, businesses, training organisations, local and county councils, educational establishments and all parties interested in youth issues. We wish to encourage communication and networking and as such the project has an open-door policy and welcomes the opportunity to talk about our work and develop pro-active relationships.
At Area 43 we are committed to assisting young people, we believe that young people are a valuable asset to our society and that as they progress and succeed in life then our society will be better for it. We strive to assist in any constructive way possible to bring the best out in the youth communities of Wales.
