Project NUR in a nutshell
• Project NUR aims to set up a community-owned organisation to offer solar panels and a battery at no upfront cost to organisations, businesses and residents (‘participants’) in Cardiff and Newport.
• Participants reduce their fuel bills by using electricity when the sun shines. Electricity not used is stored in the battery for later.
• A smart software platform virtually connects participants together into a ‘Community Virtual Power Plant’. It learns participants’ energy needs, then discharges and charges the battery accordingly to provide them with cheap electricity. Trading electricity collectively from the batteries with the National Grid creates income for the community-owned organisation.
• Everyone saves money and reduces their electricity bills.
Project NUR is exploring options for participants to:
• host the solar panels and battery (the community-owed organisation owns them) OR
• purchase the equipment (the participant owns them).
Who can participate?
• Cardiff and Newport community organisations, businesses and residents that own or privately rent their premises or home.
• Any household income level can participate. Project NUR is not means-tested.
Unfortunately, Project NUR is not for social housing tenants or people living in flats.
Project NUR wants to reach households with few savings or no disposable income who cannot afford to buy solar panels.
