River Severn Custodians

The River Severn Custodians are volunteers whose aim is to understand the river around Newtown and make it a lovely, natural place for the whole community to enjoy. We want it to be somewhere that people can stroll, splash, paddle, watch wildlife and fish.

Our work involves making sure that the river is tidy and safe, reporting pollution, encouraging wildlife, and helping Newtonians and visitors enjoy this great facility.

We are using scientific survey techniques to characterize all aspects of the river, resulting in maps showing main features and species distribution. These data will be used to monitor changes over time and indicate areas where problems exist. The surveys will also identify where non-native, invasive species are a problem that should be controlled. These invasives include Giant Hogweed, Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and the American Signal Crayfish.
